I have spent all week listening to people predict what the Colts were going to do, bemoan how back Andrew Luck was, how great Peyton Manning and RG3 were, some condemn Irsay for releasing Manning and some even praise Irsay. I even heard a moron (and I don’t use that lightly) say that the Colts were idiots for getting rid of Peyton Manning. He kept saying “You don’t trade Babe Ruth, You don’t trade Babe Ruth, You don’t trade Babe Ruth,!”
Hey Moron! Two things: (1) Irsay didn’t trade Manning, he released him! and (2) The Yankees did trade Babe Ruth and then went on to win 4 straight Wold Series after missing the playoffs the next season. OK, maybe he wasn’t a Moron – Idiot is a better moniker. Where do these guys come from?
Look, people – Let’s get real. This Colts team is raw, inexperienced and not very good. How many more points do you think Peyton Manning would have put up against the Bears last Sunday? How would Andrew Luck have done on a team that was much better than the Colts, say the Washington Redskins or Denver Broncos? I don’t know… and neither do you! RG3 had an excellent opening game – much better than Andrew Luck, but the team and the competition mean something. The Redskins are a much better team with an offensive genius as coach and they were playing the Saints whose defense and secondary are decimated and HORRIBLE. Did I mention that the Saints defense was bad?
If you had compared Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning after their first NFL game, you might have concluded that Leaf was the future Hall-of-Famer. By the way, this is not a slight to RG3, who I think is a terrific quarterback, with a great arm, and an even better human being (I did not mean to compare him to Ryan Leaf).
I do know that for about the past five years, Bill Polian had lost his magic (maybe we can blame it on Chris). The Colts drafts have not yielded much in that time, the team was getting older, beat up and was undersized. A change had to be made. It was time to go a different direction. The Colts won 2 games last season, without Peyton Manning. When the Patriots lost Tom Brady for a season a few years ago, they won 11 games. Let’s face it: the Colts just were a bad team last year and they are not a good team this year. Peyton Manning might have helped them win a game or two more (if he didn’t get killed behind that offensive offensive line), but it was simply time to move on. It was time to go a different direction.
Andrew Luck is better as a rookie than Peyton Manning – that I believe. Actually, I know that. Even Ray Charles could see that. I also believe that this team can win at least 5 games. Anything more would be amazing. Give Ryan Grigson another year and the team should have a chance at winning 10+ games. Right now, we need to be patient. The game with the Vikings is a winnable game. I predicted the Colts would lose last week and they did, but this week I am predicting that Andrew Luck gets his first win, IF the defense can tighten it up just a little. They will miss Dwight Freeney who is out (ankle) and Austin Collie (concussion), but it’s NEXT MAN UP! Let’s see if they fixed any problems from last week and see if they have grown as a team. Adrian Peterson is not human, so who knows what will happen?
